REVERBERATIONS OF FAITH
THE WRITER OF HEBREWS says a curious thing about Abel: “By faith he speaks, even though he is dead.” The faith of Abel is reverberating from the grave. Abel never said a recorded word while alive, but he’s evidently become loquacious after death. How does Abel speak after his death? Do we want to say what countless funeral sermons have said about this text? The good works of a righteous person, in this case Abel’s, continue to speak long after the person who performed them is gone. We can admire his faith, learn from it, and imitate it. In this way Abel, though dead, still speaks to subsequent generations.
